Webinar debates smart cities and challenges in the Latin American context
The event, which will bring together authorities from various countries in the region, marks the first action of the agreement between NIC.br and ITU-T; during the meeting, a study on the topic will be launched
The webinar “Smart and Sustainable Cities and Cutting-edge Technologies in Latin America” will bring together on Tuesday (8), starting at 11 a.m., specialists from different countries to discuss the smart cities model in the context of the region. Held by the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br), of the Information and Coordination Center of Ponto BR (NIC.br), together with the International Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), the online event marks the first joint action between the institutions following a memorandum of understanding that foresees the realization of awareness, research, and information dissemination activities related to the theme.
The event will also see the launch of the Sectoral Study "Information and Communication Technologies in Urban Management: challenges for measuring smart cities," part of the Cadernos NIC.br series of Sectoral Studies, which explores the complexities related to the concept of a smart city and its forms of measurement.
“We understand that for a city to be considered 'smart,' it is necessary to address the specific challenges of that location. It is not enough to apply a one-size-fits-all model to all cities worldwide since each has its own specificities. In summary, there is no single format for a 'smart' city, each locality needs to address its own local issues. This is a topic that will be addressed in the webinar, as well as in the newly released publication,” argues Alexandre Barbosa, manager of Cetic.br.
Tatiana Jereissati, coordinator of Qualitative Methods and Sectoral Studies at Cetic.br, adds that local particularities directly impact measurement. “Typically, smart city measurement models are proposed by organizations and countries of the global north. However, they also need to make sense for our reality. Therefore, it is important to bring the discussion to the geographical context of Latin America.”
The webinar will be opened by Demi Getschko, CEO of NIC.br, and Chaesub Lee, director of ITU-T. Among the confirmed speakers are: Alexandre Barbosa, manager of Cetic.br; Cristina Bueti, adviser at ITU; Ana Maria Meiners, Mayor of the city of Esperanza (Argentina); Katrina Naut, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic; Eduardo López Moreno, Director of the United Nations Program for Settlements in Mexico and Cuba, among other authorities. Smart City Measurement
The topic “smart city measurement” is the guiding thread of the publication that will be launched by Cetic.br during the event. One of its chapters is based on data from the survey ICT Electronic Government, which points out differences and inequalities in Brazil regarding the use of Information and Communication Technologies by municipalities.
“We must consider all the particularities that make up a complex territory like Brazil when thinking about smart cities, both in terms of implementation and measurement. The publication also highlights how this debate is relevant for public policy formulation,” reinforces Barbosa.
Cooperation Agreement
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is a United Nations agency specialized in information and communication technologies. Cetic.br|NIC.br has been working for years in conjunction with the ITU Telecommunication Development Sector (ITU-D), focusing on the production of statistics. The agreement with the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), responsible for standardization and norms, strengthens a new stage in the relationship between the two institutions which, as mentioned earlier, seeks to establish a cooperation framework including awareness, research, and information dissemination activities related to the theme “smart cities.”
“It is a pleasure for NIC.br to strengthen the ties of cooperation with ITU-T, especially regarding such an up-to-date and relevant topic as ‘smart cities.’ ITU-T brings with it the endorsement of the UN in its interactions with its member states, which will enable important discussions in the Latin American context. NIC.br, in turn, through Cetic.br, has a Center for Excellence Studies in the production of indicators on the use and appropriation of ICT in Brazil. It is an enriching and productive partnership for all,” highlights Demi Getschko, CEO of NIC.br.
