Seminar presents overview of Internet access and usage inequalities in urban areas
Event by Cetic.br/NIC.br, the Center for Metropolitan Studies, and the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning will be held on 10/28 with free registration
The current scenario of Internet access and usage in urban areas, as well as the impacts of online inequalities on public policies for digital inclusion, will be discussed in São Paulo on October 28 during the Seminar “Mapping digital inequalities: new methodologies and evidence for public policies.”
Organized by the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) of the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br), in partnership with the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) and the Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning (Cebrap), the event is also part of the international project DiSTO – From Digital Skills to Tangible Outcomes, led by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Those interested in participating in the Seminar should register for free at: https://mapeandodesigualdadesdigitais.cetic.br/.
With the participation of national and international specialists, the event's program will feature two panels and mark the launch of the TIC Households 2018 survey publication and the Sectoral Study: “Digital inequalities in urban areas: a study on Internet access and usage in the city of São Paulo.” Based on the case study of São Paulo, the country's largest metropolis, the book presents data to understand the relationship between digital and social inequalities and how access and usage of the network are spread across urban territories.
"Even though the city of São Paulo, for example, has progressed more rapidly than the national average in terms of connected users, looking at the metrics within the municipality shows significant inequalities. This type of analysis is important for designing more effective urban policies," comments Alexandre Barbosa, manager of Cetic.br.
The Seminar will gather, in its first panel titled “The territory matters: methodological innovations for measuring digital inequalities at the local level,” Ellen Helsper (London School of Economics and Political Science), Tomás Wissenbach (Cebrap), Luis Claudio Kubota (Institute for Applied Economic Research - IPEA), and Graziela Castello (Cebrap). The second panel will discuss the relations between public policies and digital and social inequalities, featuring Karen Mossberger (Arizona State University), Marta Arretche (Center for Metropolitan Studies), Francisco Gaetani (EBAPE/FGV), and Fabio Senne (Cetic.br).
All information about the schedule and registrations is available on the event website, which will be broadcast on NIC.br's YouTube channel.
