The proportion of Brazilian companies using faster Internet connections grows, reports Cetic.br

Releases 16 MAI 2016

The TIC Companies 2015 survey also investigates the ways of using ICT in various markets of operation

The eleventh edition of the TIC Companies survey, conducted by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) through the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) of the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br), indicates a shift in the profile of information and communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure present in Brazilian companies. The study identified an increase in the contracting of internet connections with higher speed ranges: between 2012 and 2015, the proportion of Brazilian companies that reported contracting plans with speeds up to 1 Mbps decreased from 19% to 8%, while those that hired speeds above 10 Mbps increased from 21% in 2012 to 40% in 2015. This movement was observed among companies of all sizes.

The objective of the study – which will now be conducted every two years – is to provide insights to understand the adoption of ICT in companies from different markets of operation investigated in the survey and support public policies that encourage the development of ICT in these sectors.

The TIC Companies 2015 survey also shows that 70% of companies have Internet connection via telephone line – DSL and 64% via cable, while only 5% have dial-up connection and 6% via satellite. The availability of computers and the Internet in Brazilian companies of small, medium, and large size has been universalized for some years, according to the survey's historical series. Mobile devices, however, are not yet widely disseminated: laptops and tablets are present in 69% and 19% of companies, respectively.

"The TIC Companies survey identified, in recent years, concrete advances in the quality of ICT infrastructure in companies. However, it is important to note that having only good internet speed is not enough; it is necessary to monitor the activities companies are performing on the network, especially how internet access is being used to improve performance and innovation, as well as understand the differences existing between the regions of the country and the markets of operation," points out Alexandre Barbosa, manager of Cetic.br.

Online Activities

Sending emails (99%), searching for information about products or services (94%), and making payments, transfers, and bank consultations via Internet banking (88%) remain the most frequent activities for the majority of Brazilian companies. Tasks that require specific skills, on the other hand, are performed to a lesser extent: 43% of companies stated that they deliver products or services in digital format, 35% conduct employee training, and 32% use internet telephony (VoIP).

Internet Presence

The presence of websites by companies has not shown a significant variation since 2012, when it began to be measured by the survey, remaining at 57% in 2015. This indicator, however, varies according to size: among large and medium companies, 87% and 75% respectively have a website. Among smaller companies, this proportion is lower (52%). The survey reveals growth in the percentage of companies with a profile or own account on some social network: it increased from 36% in 2012 to 51% in 2015. Among large and medium-sized companies, 60% and 56% respectively have profiles on social networks, while among small companies this figure is 50%. "Social networks may represent a smaller obstacle for small companies compared to websites and other online communication tools. In 2014, for example, 11% of them had a social network profile and no email, while in 2015, this proportion was 18%," informs Barbosa.

Skills and Appropriation of ICT

The main type of software used is licensed, reaching 76% of companies, compared to 52% that use free license software and 22% that use company-developed software. In 2015, 70% of Brazilian companies promoted software updates and a smaller portion (31%) introduced new software. In the perception of companies, this introduction or update of software mainly improved the organization of company processes (80%), the production of information for decision-making (74%), and integration and communication between company areas (71%).
