Representatives from countries that are part of the American Network of Cooperation on Electronic Health (RACSEL) participated in the workshop

The Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) of the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br) hosted the “Capacity Strengthening for Measuring the Maturity Level in the Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the Health Sector in the member countries of the American Network of Cooperation on Electronic Health (RACSEL)” workshop.

The event, held in São Paulo from July 26 to 28, aimed to develop knowledge and skills to measure the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in health systems in Latin America, considering the experience of measuring ICT in the health sector conducted by Brazil and Uruguay using international methodologies from the OECD1 and ECLAC2. The event included representatives from the Ministries of Health of Chile and Peru, Colombia's Ministry of ICT, Uruguay's AGESIC3, and the Costa Rican Social Security Fund.

“Given the strategic importance of producing comparable statistics and the need to improve and facilitate the processes of measuring ICT in the countries of the region, terms of a technical cooperation agreement between NIC.br and the RACSEL Network, which is supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), were discussed,” explains Alexandre Barbosa, manager of Cetic.br.

The project aims to support countries in establishing a permanent means of exchanging knowledge and experiences in the area, in order to generate a series of products that help the region in the development of e-health measurements. To this end, during the three-day event, the work of NIC.br/Cetic.br was presented, and the national contexts of each participating country, international references and methodological aspects were discussed, as well as group dynamics being held to develop measurement strategies for each country.

“The discussions promoted and the ongoing agreement are expected to help participants develop the knowledge and skills to design national ICT usage measures in health, in accordance with available international standards, and be capable of producing a document with recommendations for these measurements taking into account their regional contexts,” Barbosa emphasizes.
