Notas 11 NOV 2014

The Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (CETIC.br), with the support of the UNESCO Representation in Brazil, will launch next Wednesday (12) the translation of the UNESCO Global Report: Opening New Avenues for Empowerment - ICT Access to Information and Knowledge for Persons with Disabilities.

The launch will take place during the Accessible Americas: Information and Communication for All event, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UNESCO Representation in Brazil, the Human Rights Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, the São Paulo City Hall (Municipal Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities and Reduced Mobility) and the National Telecommunications Agency (ANATEL). Discussions will be promoted on the importance of ICT in empowering persons with disabilities, facilitating the sharing of good practices and encouraging greater attention to the needs of this population.

Empowerment

Based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, this Global Report provides emphatic recommendations for all actors – from decision makers to educators, civil society, and industry – on how to achieve concrete progress in the area of rights for people living with disabilities.

The report uses as its main reference five regional studies commissioned by UNESCO. It presents supplementary material to provide an overview and critical understanding of the use of ICT for access to information and knowledge, as well as offering information on policies and practices aimed at persons with disabilities.

The translation of the publication offers an opportunity to disseminate the content to the Lusophone community, reinforcing the objectives of inclusion and sharing good practices regarding the relationship between ICT and persons with disabilities.
