CETIC.br launches publication of the survey on the use of ICT in Non-Profit Organizations
The book features original articles and data analysis on the presence of technological infrastructure and ways of using the Internet in the sector
The first TIC Non-Profit Organizations 2012 survey publication has been launched, conducted by the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) of the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br). The publication by the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br) brings together, in addition to tables with results, original articles, and analysis of the mapped indicators.
The study provides a profile of infrastructure, usage types, capabilities, and skills necessary for the incorporation of new information and communication technologies (ICT) in non-profit organizations. A total of 3,546 non-governmental organizations, associations, foundations, religious organizations, and unions were interviewed at the national level.
Among the results revealed by TIC Non-Profit Organizations 2012, it was found that Internet usage reaches 72% of organizations, with a significant presence on social networks: 52% of non-profit organizations with Internet access have a profile on some social network, blog, or forum.
"Civil society organizations are increasingly involved in public policies, both in the development of projects and in their execution. The use of technologies is fundamental in this process. We have numerous cases of strong social mobilization on the Internet, whether in sustainability issues, human rights, among so many others," says Vera Masagão Ribeiro, executive director of the Brazilian Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (Abong) and one of the experts who collaborated with the survey.
"The appropriation of the use of ICT is an important asset for civil society organizations to participate in forums and discussion and decision-making spaces about the future of public policies," adds Carlos Alberto Afonso, member of CGI.br and author of the introduction text in the printed version of the survey.
Book
The TIC Non-Profit Organizations 2012 publication features articles by academics and representatives of national organizations on relevant topics for the sector. The book also presents a methodological report and analysis of the main results on access to and use of ICT by non-profit organizations, in addition to result tables broken down by cross-referencing variables, such as size, region, and main activity.
"We hope that the data and analyses of this first edition of the TIC Non-Profit Organizations survey will be an important resource and can support actions for the strategic incorporation of ICT in the sector," highlights Alexandre Barbosa, manager of Cetic.br.
The survey involved the collaboration of a group of experts made up of members of Abong, the Group of Institutes, Foundations, and Companies (Gife), the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea), and researchers from various universities.
