Cetic.br releases data on Internet providers and ICT usage by Brazilian companies

Releases 04 AGO 2015

Remote access to work tools and increased density of providers per inhabitant are among the highlights of the ICT Enterprises 2014 and ICT Providers 2014 surveys, respectively.

The Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br), through the Regional Center for Studies on the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br) and the Brazilian Network Information Center (NIC.br), is conducting the joint release of two of its surveys this Tuesday (04): the ICT Enterprises and ICT Providers surveys.

Aiming to measure access and use of information and communication technologies (ICT) among Brazilian companies with 10 or more occupied persons, the ICT Enterprises survey reaches its 10th edition in 2014. The survey was conducted with a sample of 7,198 companies representing 11 different sectors of the economy.

The ICT Providers 2014 survey, in turn, investigates the activity of Internet access providing companies in the country. The survey was conducted between September 2013 and October 2014 with the support of the main associations of Internet service providers in Brazil and identified 2,138 formal Internet service provisioning companies across the national territory.

ICT Enterprises 2014
The survey found that 74% of companies using computers already offer some form of remote access to the company's occupied persons, including actions such as access to corporate email (56%), computer systems (56%), and company folders and files (49%). These tools are available in a higher proportion for executives or directors (91%) and IT professionals (85%) compared to other occupied persons (57%) in the company. "Globally, the universalization of access and use of ICT and the advancement of connectivity in companies will certainly generate significant transformations in work practices, including the emergence of a sharing economy. The ICT Enterprises survey has provided relevant information over the past 10 years that help understand how the technological environment in companies is evolving in Brazil, promoting innovation through ICT," says Alexandre Barbosa, manager of Cetic.br.

Regarding mobility, the ICT Enterprises 2014 reveals that among companies using computers, 71% have portable computers and 22% have tablets - in 2011, only 13% of companies used tablets. The survey also found that 78% of companies have a wireless local area network and 72% used corporate cell phones.

Regarding web presence, 62% of companies with Internet access reported having a website - among large companies (with more than 250 occupied persons), this proportion is 86%. The proportion of those that adopted social networks is also growing: 45% have their own profile, while in 2012 only 36% of companies reported having a profile on these channels. Concern about the image and updating of social networks was also verified, as 72% of companies with a profile have an area or responsible person for its monitoring, and more than half of them post daily (20%) or at least once a week (38%).

In relation to e-commerce, 21% of companies with Internet access sold products or services online. Email is the most used channel for sales (by 79% of companies), while the website is used by 58%. Social networks (31%) and group buying sites (19%) are less used for trade.

Regarding capacities and skills, it was found that only 39% of companies have an area or department of Information Technology (IT). Among large companies, however, this percentage reaches 89%. The ICT Enterprises 2014 also found that among companies using computers, 30% introduced new software and 24% of companies used software developed by themselves.

ICT Providers 2014
Most Internet service providers operate in the Southeast region (43%), followed by the South (31%), Northeast (21%), Center-West (15%), and North (9%). The presence in the South region showed an increase of eight percentage points compared to the first survey conducted in 2011. The ICT Providers 2014 also recorded an increase in provider density per inhabitant, notably in the North region, which went from 0.76 to 1.12 providers per 100,000 inhabitants. In general, 45% of companies serve up to three municipalities, while 22% serve more than ten.

Regarding connection speeds, the most offered are in the range of 1Mbps to 10 Mbps - a service offered by 94% of companies. Only 9% of providers offer speeds between 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps to their clients, while 89% offer connections from 128 Kbps to 1 Mbps. Companies offering lower speeds are concentrated in the North region where 95% of providers offer speeds from 128 Kbps to 1 Mbps.

The survey also indicates that 70% of providers have autonomous systems (AS - Autonomous System). Those who do not yet use this resource pointed to the cost involved and the amount of initial investment as major impediments. The ICT Providers 2014 reveals that 28% of companies participate in a traffic exchange point (PTT), with the improvement of the Internet services quality (cited by 88% of companies), reducing traffic cost (79%), and improving the local Internet traffic organization (73%) as the main reasons for participation in PTTs.
